How to Layer Thermal Base Layers (Without the Bulk)

Layering is not about wearing more; it is about wearing smarter. The classic system has three jobs. Your base layer manages moisture — sweat that stays on the skin turns cold within minutes. Your mid layer traps warm air. Your shell blocks wind and rain so that trapped air stays put.
A heat-reflective base layer sits at the first layer, against the skin. Its job is twofold: move moisture away and return radiant body heat instead of letting it escape. Because the warmth comes from the fabric structure rather than thickness, you can stay warm in a single close-fitting layer under a normal sweater and coat — no marshmallow silhouette.
The mistake most people make is a cotton base layer. Cotton drinks sweat and holds it there, chilling you for hours. Swap it for a proper technical base and the whole system works.
