Heat-Reflective Fabric vs Cotton, Wool and Down

Cotton is comfortable until it gets wet — and warmth that fails the moment you sweat is not warmth at all. Wool is naturally odour-resistant and keeps some heat when damp, but it can itch, shrink and add bulk. Down has the best warmth-to-weight when dry, yet collapses into flat sadness the instant it absorbs moisture, and it takes a lot of care to wash. A heat-reflective technical base layer is engineered for the layer closest to your body: a brushed inner face that wicks, a still-air core that insulates, and a reflective finish that returns radiant heat. It stays light, dries fast, resists pilling and holds its performance wash after wash. The honest answer is that no single material wins every situation. But for the layer you wear directly against your skin through a whole winter, a well-made thermal base is the one that does the most work for the least weight.
